About Lavonia
Martin, artist
I'm
a Southern artist who has ties to fine art and illustration. Trained as a fine
artist, I became fascinated by art of the West Coast, Eastern comic arts, folk
art, Native American art, and Ukiyo-e. I decided to take my illustrative style,
but use it in a studio setting doing paintings, drawings, and printmaking. My
work is about existence - life, death, and all the experiences in between. I often
use icons or objects that have personal meaning to express myself. There is a
certain narrative quality to my work, it tells a simple story about feeling or
emotion, thoughts or perspective.
Even
though my art has been described by one interviewer as a mix of Tokyo Pop meets
West Coast art, I am very close to my Southern roots. I have all these memories
of things that are old and antiquated, houses and objects, that still have a soft
place in my heart. The Southern landscape also fills my canvases in the visions
of my girls. So,these reflections of life make appearances in my work quite often.
